No more burial ceremony in Benin til..... says Oba of Benin

           


The Benin Traditional Council has banned all burial
ceremonies in the kingdom till January 2017,
following the crowning of the new Oba of Benin on
Thursday, October 20, 2016.
In a statement released on October 2, the Benin
Traditional Council stated that the post-coronation
ceremonies of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo,
Uku Akpolopkolo, Oba Erediauwa, Oba of Benin, is
still ongoing until December ending.
The new monarch was crowned as the 39th Oba of
Benin kingdom in a colourful ceremony on Thursday,
October 20, 2016.
Ahead of the coronation ceremonies of Oba Ewuare
II, prohibition was placed on burial activities in the
kingdom untill further notice.
The Oba of Benin is the traditional ruler of the Edo
people and head of the historic Eweka dynasty of the
Great Benin Empire.
In following developments, a family in Benin have
incurred the wrath of the newly crowned Oba Ewuare
II, for planning the burial ceremony of their father.
The family of Uhunmwangho from Isi village in
Uhunmwode Local Government area of Edo state
were dragged to the palace of the new Oba of Benin
for organizing burial ceremonies of their father when
the ban on burial ceremonies was still in force for the
Oba coronation.
Some chiefs from the Oba’s palace, soon after all
was set for the social dance for the burial
ceremonies at Iguodala Primary School in Benin City,
stormed the venue and tied ‘Umehe’ leaves on the
food, drinks and canopies.
The ‘Umenhe’ leaves is a message of no trespass
from the Oba. Some members of the family were
arrested and taken to the palace while the musician
engaged to provide entertainment was also dragged

As penalty for their sin, the family will have to pay
some fine and postpone the burial in order to cleanse
the lands and save the family.
