Auchi Polytechnic Sacks 13 Lecturers, Demotes 16 Others For Sexual Harassment and Extortion

The administration at the Federal Polytechnic in Auchi, Edo State have dismissed 13 lectures and demoted 16 others over sexual harassment and extortion of students, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The polytechnic's spokesperson, Mustapaha Oshiobugie, disclosed this to NAN on Wednesday.

"A total of 41 persons were involved in sexual harassment and extortion of money," he said. "Five lecturers were dismissed, eight got their appointments terminated and 16 were demoted. Four others were warned, two advised, two cautioned, one recommended for mentoring while two students were denied further admission in the institution."

Mr. Oshiobugie added that "painstaking investigations" have been conducted by both internal and independent panels of inquiry established by the National Board for Technical Education and the Ministry of Education.

News of the sacking came just one day after the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, expressed deep concern over allegations of sexual harassment and extortion within Nigeria's educational institutions.
