Former First Lady Patience Jonathan’s Multiple Bank Accounts Frozen By Federal High Court

 

Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has given an order that an account operated by former first lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, be frozen on the ground that it contains suspected proceeds of crime. The account, domiciled with Skye Bank plc, has a balance of $5,316.66.

Also affected by the order are five companies and one Esther Oba. The companies collectively have balances totaling N7,418,829,290.94 (seven billion four hundred and eighteen million eight hundred and twenty nine thousand two hundred and ninety naira ninety four kobo) in six commercial banks, while Esther Obafo has a balance of $429,381.87.

The court order was sequel to a further affidavit in support of Ex-parte originating summons sworn to by Mr. Abdulahi Tukur, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and filed before the court by EFCC prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo.     Mr. Tukur averred that there is an urgent need for the court to direct the managers of the bank accounts contained in the schedule filed with the summons (FHC/L/CS/1343/16) to, in the interim, forfeit the money in the accounts, to prevent further tampering with such.

The five companies affected are Finchley Top Homes Limited, Aribawa Aruera, Magel Resort Limited, AM -PM Global Network Limited Pansy Oil and Gas Limited.

Finchley Top Homes Limited is alleged to have fraudulently open account number 1102001996 domiciled with Ecobank Plc and has a current balance of N226,376,700.23 and a fixed deposit with a balance of N1,099,511,484.88.

The company also fraudulently opened other accounts These are account 1771731336, domiciled with Skye Bank and with a current balance of N14,173,848.85; Fidelity Bank account 4011019539  with a current balance of N1,800,494,000; Stanbic Bank account 0016901361 with a current balance of N40,594,12.88; and Diamond Bank account 0019213687 with a current balance of N39,418,712.12.

 Aribawa Aruera Reachout Foundation opened account number 1222014221 with Ecobank and has a closing balance of N479,893,431.01, while Magel Resort Limited accounts (4011019546/5250059782) with Fidelity Bank has a subsisting balance of N1,000,494,000.

The company also operates two other accounts (1011744356) in Zenith Bank, which has a balance of N858,923,982, and 0024351590 with Diamond Bank and has a balance of N174,166,207.00.

AM-PM Global Network Limited opened account number 0026718889 at Diamond Bank and has a balance of N7,213,303.50.

The account opened by Pansy Oil and Gas Limited at Fidelity Bank (4011019577) has a current balance of N1,809,666,494.68, while that at Diamond Bank (0026838491) has a balance of N55,930,024.50.

Esther Oba was found to have opened account number 0019213689 with Diamond Bank and has a current balance of $429,381.87.

All the monies are suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Upon the receipt of an intelligence report, the EFCC said it carried out analyses, which showed that the accounts merited being investigated. As such, Mr.  Tukur averred that it would serve the course of justice to grant the application for such.

The presiding judge, Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, while granting the order freezing the accounts listed, ordered the anti-graft agency to file an undertaking in relation to damages payable by it if it turns out that the order should not have been made.

Nigeria's vice president Yemi Osinbajo, is set for a two-day official visit in Algeria.

Osinbajo is to set-off to the North African nation on Tuesday December 13, Vanguard reports.

The visit is on the invitation of the Algerian government, a statement issued by the vice presidential spokesman, Mr Laolu Akande, said on Monday, During the visit, Osinbajo, who would be received by the Algerian Prime Minister, Abdelmalek Sellal, is to hold talks with the Algerian President Abdellaziz Bouteflika.

He would also interact with members of the Upper and Lower chambers of the Algerian legislature.


The visit would explore the deepening of diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Algeria while also reviewing specific areas of security cooperation. Both countries would also use the opportunity to harmonize their positions on multilateral issues of common interest and share ideas on how to address some international challenges especially those confronting Africa.

It would be recalled that in August, the Algerian President sent a Special Envoy to Nigeria, in person of the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ramtane Lamamra.

The Special Envoy was then received in audience on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari, by Vice President Osinbajo.

The Special Envoy reiterated Algeria’s support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, calling for increased collaboration between both countries in the areas of intelligence gathering and deradicalisation programmes.

In 2002, both countries set up the Nigeria-Algeria Bi-National Commission to enhance bilateral cooperation, and signed a number of Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoU).

The MOU included those related to the creation of the ‘Development Corridor’, with such projects as the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Project, the Trans-Sahara Highway Project and the Trans-Saharan Fiber Optic Project.

While in Algeria, Osinbajo would also visit a food processing plant and meet representatives of the Nigerian community.

The Vice President would be accompanied on the visit by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Khadija Bukar Abba Ibrahim, and the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Ade Ipaye. The Vice President is expected back on Wednesday Dec. 14.

In a similar vein, President Muhammadu Buhari and other West African leaders will travel to Gambia on Tuesday, December 13, in a bid to end the political crisis in the West African nation.

An anonymous senior government official reportedly told BBC, that the visit is due to the refusal of authoritarian ruler Yahya Jammeh's to accept defeat at the hands of former estate agent Adama Barrow.

''I Will Run A Transparent Government"-Governor Obaseki

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has vowed to cut unwarranted expenditure as part of efforts to run a transparent government and free up resources.

Obaseki also assured the people that his administration would neither involve itself in frivolity nor play to the gallery while  implementing government policies and programmes.

The governor, who stated this while addressing participants at the end of a three-day strategy dialogue with permanent secretaries, the political class and members of the civil society in Benin, on Saturday, also promised to strengthen efforts in revenue collection, through a friendly tax policy.

He said, “I will cut wastefulness and unwarranted expenditure through efforts at running a transparent, accountable and prudent government to free up resources to enable the implementation of most of the projects identified by the participants at the workshop.”

He noted that he would, in the next six weeks, prioritise the implementation of each of the recommendation made by the six thematic groups identified in the workshop, adding that those who would make up his cabinet and other government agencies would be appraised.

According to him, the critical consensus of the resource persons at the three-day event included the need to invest in data collections, planning, enforcement of established government laws and the implementation and execution of government policies and programmes.

Obaseki explained, “Our promise from the beginning was that we are going to stop and desist from a situation where contractors and service providers will be the one defining government agenda and policies.

“Over the next six weeks, we now need to galvanise each of those thematic areas. So, we will have sessions like this, focusing on specific things and bringing them down to actionable steps.”

He continued, “So, we will now decide which programmes, what do we have the money for, when we are to get what done, the timelines and who will be responsible.

“And this will be done before commissioners and other political appointees are made. We will know the requirements before we appoint people and, after appointing them, we will have specific deliverables for them to achieve.”

Governor Udom Orders Arrest Of Contractors And Engineers Of Collapsed Church Building in Uyo

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has ordered the immediate arrest of the contractors and engineers, that constructed the Reigners Bible Church, which collapsed in Uyo on Saturday.

The Governor and his Deputy were attending the ordination service of Bishop Akan Weeks, when the building came down. He, however, escaped death.

One of Emmanuel’s personal assistants on media, Mr. Aniekeme Finbarr, told CNN’s Becky Anderson, that his principal gave the order on Sunday, December 11.

“They should be made to answer certain questions so that the state would be able to get to the root cause of the matter,” the Governor was quoted as saying.

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has also called for a probe into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, he commiserated with the people of Akwa Ibom.

Saraki also called for “urgent and thorough investigation to determine both the remote and immediate causes of the building collapse.

“I believe that such an investigation, if sincerely done, will help us to guard against unnecessary waste of lives, injuries and damage to property in the future. My heart goes out to all the victims, the Christian community in Akwa Ibom State and the entire people of the state.”

First of all, I wish all Muslims a happy and memorable celebration of the birth of the great Prophet, through whose teachings, particularly on peaceful living, tolerance, sobriety, generosity, sacrifice and honesty, and wisdom, the nation has gained immensely in building a harmonious and prosperous society. The universal truths of the Prophet’s values remain unchanged.


Against all odds, we have used these pillars of strength in securing a just and fair society, and our efforts are beginning to yield dividends in curbing terrorism, militancy, corruption and other crimes that devalue our humanity.

As we use the memorable occasion of this celebration to reflect on our current challenges, I urge you not to lose faith in the ability of this administration to make a difference in the lives of our people.

UNBELIEVABLE!! Army School Commandant Found Dead In Ibadan Within The School Premises

The Commandant of Command Secondary School, Ibadan, Col. Anthony Okeyim, was on Monday found dead in his apartment within the school premises.

Some of those who were close to the deceased said he was strangled to death by suspected assassins after he was attacked in front of his official quarter.

An unconfirmed report also claimed that Col. Okeyim’s throat was slit open by his killers.

The school is located in secluded Bode Igbo area of Ibadan, which is close to the border territory between Oyo and Ogun states.

Although the large property is fenced, the school is largely surrounded by thick forests and there have been reports of encroachment on the land by some people in the past.

Confirming the murder, the Oyo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, told Punch correspondent that the Police was treating it as a suspected case of murder.

“I can confirm to you that the deceased was found dead in front of his apartment around 6.30am on Monday. We are treating it as a case of suspected murder.

“The State Commissioner of Police, Samuel Adegbuyi, visited the school immediately the case was reported.

“Police investigation had begun and the investigating team is working with Military Police investigating team. We have also beefed up security around the area,” Ajisebutu said.

A friend of the late army officer who preferred anonymity said Col. Okeyim was promoted three weeks ago and that he was waiting to be fully decorated with his new rank.

He said, “It is a pity that such a gentleman who was committed to his duty as a military officer and school commandant could be killed in gruesome manner inside a military formation.

“There are posts mounted by infantry soldiers from the gate of the school and visitors are not allowed inside except if they have a genuine mission.

“If the school commandant could be killed in such manner, how safe are the civilian staff and pupils who live in the school?

“Tony was only recently promoted to the rank of brigadier in the Army and he was waiting to be decorated before he was killed.

“I pray that investigation into the murder will not be an incomplete one.”

OMG! Two Nigerian Students Drown In Malaysia.(PHOTOS)

Two Nigerians, Amate Mohamed Amate, 26, and Emine-Imoh Daniel, 23, both students at the Curtin University Malaysia, died after they drowned following a boat mishap yesterday. The bodies of the Nigerians were reported missing when their boat, carrying seven people, capsized while on a research trip.

The surviving five, three students and the boat operator and a tour guide, managed to swim to safety.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Director, Nor Hisham Mohammad, the body of Amate Mohamed Amate, was found about 50m from where the boat had capsized at 12.45pm while that of Emine-Imoh Daniel, was found about 30m from where the boat had capsized at 5.15pm.

Their bodies have been deposited at the Miri Hospital for post-mortem.
     

UNIBEN Mourns Death of Three Lecturers In Road Crash

Management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has confirmed the death of three of its lecturers in the road crash that occurred last weekend at Abudu village in which over 22 persons were roasted.

It said the three lecturers were in the Department of Pharmacy and that they were returning from Awka in Anambra State.

Names of the deceased lecturers were given as Prof. Lucky Okunrobo, Head of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Dr. Godwin Joseph, Ag Head Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Dr. Saturday Idemudia, Assistant Lecturer Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology.

A statement signed by Public Relation Officer of the institution, Mr. Micheal Osasuyi, said the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Faraday Orunmwense, expressed shock over the death of the three lecturers.

The statement said the VC commiserates with families of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the deceased lecturers and other victims of the accident have been given a mass burial near the site of the accident.

Public Relations Officer of the Edo Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, George Otoaviokhai, said the victims were buried last Saturday.

He said the charred victims could not be identified by their families.

153 PASSENGERS DEAD IN DANA AIR CRASH IN LAGOS

153 passengers dead in Dana Air crash in Lagos
A Lagos-bound Dana Air from Abuja, Sunday, crashed into a two storey building at Ishaga, at the outskirts of Lagos, killing all 153 passengers.

The aircraft, marked 5N-RAM, disappeared from the radar scope of the Lagos Air Traffic Control after communication from the tower to the pilot in command failed, before it crashed into the residential building on Tolulope Street, in Toyin area of Ishaga.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said that the aircraft hit a power line and subsequently crashed into the building which comprised of six flats.
The aircraft exploded on impact and razed the building, according to Dr. Osanyintolu.

Emergency rescue officials said that they could not yet ascertain the number of people in the building or those who were trapped in the rubble.

In addition to LASEMA, officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigerian Red Cross, Rapid Response Squad and other rescue workers were on hand to remove corpses from the wreckage.

On one of the balconies, rescue workers removed ten bodies. 

As at the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) and Dana Air management were not willing to comment on the matter.

A spokesman of NCAA, Sam Adurogboye, said the agency would issue a statement after getting details of the crash.

Addressing journalists after the accident, Stella Oduah, the minister of Aviation, said that the pilot had declared an emergency with the Lagos control tower at “11 nautical miles” to the Murtala Mohammed Airport but the aircraft disappeared from the air traffic control radar soon afterwards.

Mrs. Oduah stated that the incident will be “thoroughly investigated to determine the exact cause in order to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.”

Levi Ajuonuma, the spokesperson of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation; Shehu Sa’ad, director of Mainstreet Bank; Ehime Aikhomu, son of late vice admiral Augustus Aikhomu; were among those aboard the ill fated flight, according to the passengers manifest released after the incident revealed after the incident.

A statement from the Presidency said that President Goodluck Jonathan while cancelling all his official engagements scheduled for Monday has declared a three day national mourning and directed that the Nigerian flag be flown at half mast.

“President joins all Nigerians in mourning all those who lost their lives in the plane crash,” Reuben Abati, presidential spokesperson, tweeted.

Also, in a tweet immediately after the crash, singer Iyanya Mbuk said that he missed the flight by a hair’s breadth.

“When its not your time.. Its not yours.. it took me 30mins to convince my manager that we should stay back in abuja.. God is great,” tweeted the Season One Winner of the MTN Project Fame West Africa.

“I don’t think I had an authentic reason to stay back in (Abuja). I just came up (wit) an excuse that I (wana) go to the studio in (abuja)….”

UPDATE 10: The Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah has addressed journalists in Lagos saying no survivor has so far been found. She explained that at 3.45 p.m., the ill-fated Flight 0992 called the control tower and declared an emergency. She said the plane dissappeared from the control tower radar shortly afterwards only to crash into a residential area.
Mrs Oduah said the Federal Government would fully investigate the cause of the crash.

UPDATE 4: Aviation minister, Stella Oodua said she was saddened by the news and was already on her way to the crash site.
“I am extremely saddened by the news of the crash and I assure the nation that investigations are underway,” she told NAN.
Reports say the crew of the aircraft declared May Day, an emergency announcement in the aviation industry, some 11 nautical miles to Lagos as the plane caught fire.
The reports said the aircraft left Abuja en-route Lagos some 50 minutes earlier.

UPDATE 3: We have just been told that the Group General Manager, Public Affairs, of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Levi Ajuonuma, was on the plane.

UPDATE 2: Dana says it is working with NCAA and FAAN to release flight manifest. The huge crowd at the scene is preventing emergency rescue team from performing their duties.

Reports reaching us say a plane belonging to Dana Airline has crashed in the Iju area of Lagos, less than five minutes away from the Lagos Airport.
The plane, which reportedly took off from Abuja, crashed at a location around Toyin Bus stop in the metropolis.
The plane is said to carry 162 passengers and crew but we are unable to independently verify that information at this point.
We however learnt that the aircraft is a a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 passenger plane having 147 passengers and 6 crew members on board.
 Below is the initial list of passengers on board the ill-fated flight.
A resident of the area said the aircraft exploded as soon as it crashed, affecting three houses in the area.
Officials of the Lagos Fire Service and other rescue workers have arrived the scene and are evacuating victims.
The National Emergency Management Agency has confirmed the incident, saying it has mobilised rescue workers to the scene.

Fire gutted the only ultra modern shopping mall in Benin, Edo State last night. Managing Director of the Super Mart Mr Philip Edigin said that the fire started at about 12 mid night.

He disclosed that all effort to get the State fire service to come to their rescue proved abortive as the fire service told him they have no diesel to work. He said he was later able to get help from the Nigeria Air force fire service, IDSL NPDC and before the State fire service came at about 6am.               


Meanwhile a supervisor in the State Fire Service Mr Franklin Agbonlahor appealed to government for urgent upgrade of facilities and equipment of the fire service.

                  Edo State Governor, Obaseki has ordered full investigation into the incident. The governor, who disclosed this on Sunday when he paid an on the spot inspection to the mall also said investigation would be conducted into the activities of the state fire service. He described the damage done to the mall as catastrophic and a major disaster.



"This incident happening at this time of the year is a catastrophe. I have asked for written report and investigation into the cause of the fire. We will also investigate the claim by an official of the state Fire service on the allegation of lack of equipment. Because I understand that trucks were distributed by the NDDC and the State Government during the last administration".



The governor said that to avert future fire disaster in Super Mart and even vehicles, all vehicles and super Mart would henceforth be made to have fire extinguishers.
